In our recent equipment deployment for the West African mixed-crop project (Project Ref: WA-Tillage-04), the client focused heavily on the Disc Plough. He understood the need to turn the soil.
However, we insisted on adding Item 4: The Subsoiler (Deep Tillage Tool) to the BOM.
The client asked: “I am already ploughing 25cm deep. Why do I need another machine to go deeper?”
The answer lies in a phenomenon called the “Plough Pan” (Hardpan). After years of heavy tractors driving over the land and ploughs sliding at the same depth, a concrete-like layer forms 30cm underground. Roots cannot penetrate it. Water cannot drain through it.
Here is why this modest ~$600 implement is critical for unlocking the soil’s potential.
The Physics of the Hardpan
In the Sahel region, rain comes in intense bursts.
- Without Subsoiling: Rainwater hits the hardpan layer and sits stagnant, drowning roots or evaporating instantly in the sun.
- With Subsoiling: The massive steel shanks of the machine rip through this hard layer (down to 40-50cm). This creates “vertical channels.”
When it rains, the water drains deep into the subsoil, acting as a reservoir for the dry season. It is essentially “vertical irrigation.”

The BOM Spec: Simple Brute Force
The unit we specified (Model 1S-Series) is deceptively simple. It has no moving parts. It is pure structural steel.

We advised the client to use this tool before the rainy season starts.
Because it requires high horsepower (traction) to drag deep steel through dry earth, we matched it to the 100HP Primary Tractor. A smaller tractor would simply spin its wheels.
For a cost of approx. $600, this tool ensures that the expensive fertilizer and water actually reach the root zone. It is the cheapest yield booster in the entire container.

Conclusion
Farming isn’t just about what happens on the surface. If your crops turn yellow despite rain, or if water pools in your field for days, you likely have a hardpan problem. The solution isn’t more fertilizer; it is a Subsoiler.
