If you stand by the side of the road in Dakar, Lagos, or Accra, watch the Chinese trucks go by. You will see a lot of HOWO (Sinotruk). In West Africa, HOWO has done such a good marketing job that the brand name has become synonymous with “Heavy Truck.” Clients often tell me: “I want a HOWO,” simply because that is the only name they know.
But as a Sourcing Architect, my job is to look past the brand name and look at the engineering fit.
This week, while sourcing a 15,000 Liter Water Bowser for a client in Senegal, we ran a direct comparison between China’s top chassis brands. The results were clear: Brand loyalty is expensive. For this specific medium-duty application, choosing the famous brand over the right brand would have cost the client an extra $14,000 USD.
Here is the “Chassis War” breakdown: Dongfeng vs. HOWO vs. Sitrak.

The Contender: HOWO (Sinotruk)
The Reputation: “The Heavy Lifter.” HOWO is legendary for its 6×4 and 8×4 dump trucks (tippers). They are beasts designed to carry 40-50 tons of rocks.
The Mismatch: When we asked the Sinotruk factory (Mr. Yang) to spec a chassis for a 15-ton water tank, they had to use their HOWO 4×2 platform.
- Specs: Weichai 290HP Engine + 10-Speed Gearbox.
- The Issue: 290 Horsepower is massive for a 15-ton load. It’s overkill. You are paying for power you will never use, and an engine that consumes more fuel.
- Factory Quote: ~256,000 RMB (Approx. $35,500 USD).
The Champion: Dongfeng Tianjin (Kingrun)
The Reputation: “The Municipal King.” In China, if you look at street sweepers, garbage compactors, or water trucks, 80% of them are Dongfeng Tianjin. This chassis is designed specifically for medium-duty municipal work.
The Perfect Fit: We consulted Mr. Ma, our Dongfeng factory partner. He recommended the standard “Golden Configuration” for 15-ton water tankers:
- Specs: Cummins 210HP Engine + 8-Speed FAST Gearbox.
- The Logic: 210HP is perfectly adequate for this weight. The 8-speed gearbox is lighter and easier to maintain than a 10-speed heavy hauler box.
- Factory Quote: ~146,000 RMB (Approx. $21,200 USD).
The Verdict: The Dongfeng does the exact same job (carrying 15,000L of water) for $14,000 less. That is the price of a brand new sedan!
The “Strict Spec” Outlier: Sitrak (Shandeka)
The Reputation: “The German Tech.” (Based on MAN technology). Our client’s tender document originally requested “Double Rear Axles” and “Heavy Duty Tires” on a small chassis. To actually build this “Frankenstein” configuration, we would have to use a Sitrak chassis—usually reserved for high-end Fire Trucks.
- Price: ~$43,800 USD.
- Why avoid it: Unless you are putting out fires at an airport, you do not need this level of complexity and cost for spraying water on a dirt road.
Engine Talk: Weichai vs. Cummins
Another factor for our West African clients is maintenance.
- HOWO usually comes with Weichai engines. Great for heavy loads, but parts can be specific to Sinotruk dealers.
- Dongfeng usually comes with Cummins engines. Cummins is a global brand. You can find Cummins filters and parts in almost every mechanic shop from Dakar to Nairobi.
For a medium-duty truck, the Dongfeng + Cummins combination offers better “Serviceability” in remote areas.
Conclusion: Don’t Buy the Badge, Buy the Truck
When you send us a request saying “I want a HOWO,” we will quote you a HOWO. We are happy to take your money. But a Sourcing Architect will also show you the alternative.
In this case, the Dongfeng Tianjin was not just the “cheaper” option; it was the better engineered option for the specific task of carrying 15 tons of water. It is lighter, more fuel-efficient, and drastically more affordable.
