The label says 200 g/m². The fibre decides. Two rolls of "identical" geotextile can differ 25% in price and a decade in service life — the gap is the fibre inside: virgin polymer or reclaimed stock. We buy geotextile by fibre grade and tested strength, weigh it on delivery, and put the lab sheet in your hands before the balance payment.

The Industry's Favourite Shortcut
Mills quote geotextile by weight because weight is easy — and easy to shave. Your engineer designed the layer for a tensile strength (kN/m), a puncture resistance, a permeability. Weight is only a proxy for those numbers, and it's a proxy that breaks the moment the fibre grade drops: reclaimed polyester needs visibly more grams to reach the same strength as virgin fibre.
So the fabric that's "the same 200 grams" for 25% less money is not the same fabric. It's a lower rung on the fibre ladder below — and on delivery day you can't tell by looking. We wrote the long version of this warning here
The Fibre Ladder
Polyester (PET) staple-fibre nonwoven, the world's workhorse geotextile. Same machine, same weight on the label — the tonne price moves ~27% top to bottom purely on what fibre goes in the hopper. Index 100 = top grade.
Indices from real mill tonne prices, 2024–25. PP (polypropylene) fabric plays the same game one price class higher — plus a UV-package surcharge and a colour surcharge.

Four grade tables — PP staple-fibre needle-punched (GB/T 17638), PET and PP continuous-filament spunbond (GB/T 17639-2023), the same PP nonwoven reported to EN ISO methods, and PET staple nonwoven to ASTM / AASHTO M 288 — with mass, tensile, CBR puncture, tear, opening size and permeability for every grade. Plus slit-film PP woven 290 g/m² for separation and reinforcement.
Tell us which standard your specification calls for — GB/T, EN ISO or ASTM — and the mill reports to that method; a third-party EN ISO or ASTM test on your batch can be arranged before loading. Rolls 3 m × 100 m or 6 m × 150 m to order; other sizes on request.

The Polymer Question
Polypropylene · PP
Polyester · PET
Staple fibre vs filament, woven vs nonwoven — that choice only matters when the drawing asks for a certified tensile value. When it does not, and what the layer really has to be is a thick cheap sheet, the honest answer is a different product: recycled fibre felt, made from shredded textile rather than virgin resin, at a fraction of the price. We ship both and we will tell you which one your job needs.
Order By Strength
These are real working equivalences from mill test data — what a given weight actually delivers in tensile strength, by construction. Notice the same 15 kN arrives at 300 g in filament PET but only 220 g in calendered PP staple: construction beats weight.
Specify the kN your design needs and let us pick the cheapest honest construction that reaches it — that's usually where 10–15% of the budget comes back.
| Construction | Weight | Delivers |
|---|---|---|
| PET filament spunbond | 300 g/m² | 15 kN/m |
| PET filament spunbond | 400 g/m² | 20 kN/m |
| PP staple, calendered | 220 g/m² | 15 kN/m |
| PP staple, loft (uncalendered) | 400 g/m² | 30 kN/m |
| Woven stabilisation fabric | by weave | up to 200×200 kN/m |
From production test data at top-grade fibre. Drop a rung on the ladder and these numbers quietly stop being true — which is exactly why we test.
Beyond Nonwoven
Woven flat-yarn fabric is the heavy lifter: haul-road stabilisation, reinforced embankments, containment bunds. We've had mill builds tested to 200 kN both directions — the lab sheet, not the brochure, is what we send you.
Composite (geotextile + membrane bonded) does separation and waterproofing in one pass — a 200 g two-cloth-one-membrane build runs around $0.25–0.30/m² indicative, and the fabric grade on each face follows the same ladder as everything above. One product, two chances to get short-changed — or one inspection that covers both.
PP nonwoven · indicative ex-works · UV grade
2025 list levels, polymer-linked — treat as the shape of the market and confirm current on inquiry. PET runs cheaper per m², woven and filament price by build.
Get today's number for my specHow We Keep The Ladder Honest
Every batch we ship gets the same three-step routine: cut samples across the roll width and weigh them (short-weighting hides at the edges), tensile-pull to the rated kN on a calibrated rig, and for exposed work, verify the UV package is actually in the batch, not just on the datasheet. You get the lab sheets and inspection photos while the goods are still at the mill — when there's still leverage to fix anything.
For tender work we align the test regime to your spec's standard family (GB/T, ASTM or EN) up front, so your engineer isn't comparing apples to a different standard's oranges.
The Freight Angle
Calendered rolls pack tight — around 32,000 m² of 270 g PP in one high-cube; light 90–100 g virgin fabric ships as 350 m rolls at 800 mm diameter. Loft (uncalendered) fabric eats volume fast, which is why the same tonnage can need a second container. We plan rolls-to-container before quoting, and mix geotextile with membrane or welders when that lands the whole job cheaper.
Full loading tables by weight and construction live in the container loading guide — or send quantities and we'll do the maths.
Straight Answers
Fibre grade. The tonne price of PET staple fibre spans about 27% from Grade-A virgin to bottom-tier regenerated, and every rung presses into a fabric that looks the same. The cheap quote is usually a lower rung sold as a higher one. We name the rung, then test the batch to prove it.
By environment. PET is the economic workhorse for most separation and filtration. PP costs more but resists aggressive chemistry (landfills, high-pH concrete contact) and takes a UV package for exposed work. If your quote doesn't say which polymer — or whether the UV additive is included — it isn't a complete quote yet.
Yes — woven flat-yarn stabilisation fabric up to 200×200 kN builds (with the actual test report), and composite geotextile-membrane products that do separation and waterproofing in one layer. Both follow the same fibre-grade verification as nonwoven.
Cut-and-weigh sampling across the roll width for true g/m², tensile pull to the rated kN on a calibrated rig, and UV-package verification for exposed grades. Lab sheets and photos reach you before the balance payment, while the goods are still at the mill.
A container is the natural unit — roughly 32,000 m² of 270 g calendered PP in a 40'HQ, more for lighter fabric. Below that, mixed containers (fabric + membrane + welder) or consolidation can still work; send the quantities and destination and we'll tell you honestly whether China freight maths beats buying regional stock.
