New importers almost always underestimate the timeline — then promise customers a date they can’t hit. Here’s a realistic picture so you can plan properly.
A realistic timeline
- Sampling & negotiation: 1–2 weeks. Getting quotes, a sample if needed, and agreeing terms.
- Production: 2–5 weeks. Depends entirely on the product and the factory’s order book. Confirm it in writing.
- Inspection & loading: a few days. Checking the goods before they ship, then loading.
- Transit: roughly 30–45 days by sea to West Africa, 18–28 days by rail to Central Asia, or a few days by air.
- Customs clearance: a few days once it lands, if your paperwork is ready.
Plan for 6–10 weeks on a first sea order
Add it up and a first sea order is commonly six to ten weeks door to door — sometimes more if anything needs re-doing. Build in a buffer, and never promise a delivery date until production is confirmed.
Want it faster?
Air freight and rail cut transit time (at a cost), and choosing a factory with stock or spare capacity cuts production time. Speed is usually a trade-off against price.
