"HDPE pipe" covers three different products. The job — gravity flow, pressure, or collection — picks the pipe; then one spec on each decides the quality.

Buried pipe doesn't carry water so much as it carries soil. Ring stiffness (SN, in kN/m²) is its resistance to being squeezed flat — set by wall structure and how much real resin is in it. Deeper burial, heavier traffic, weaker soil: higher class.
The bars beside are real relative factory prices for the same outside diameter at different ring classes. At 160 mm, stepping from SN4 to SN8 multiplies the pipe price by 2.2 — which tells you exactly what a "bargain" quote at the same diameter is: the lowest ring class, or worse, a regrind-resin core hiding inside the corrugation.
If a quote doesn't state the SN class, it isn't a pipe quote — it's a diameter quote.

Budget Anchors
Solid-wall PE pipe comes quoted two ways: GB-standard virgin resin, or "non-standard" — thinner wall, blended resin, about 18% cheaper at 75 mm on real mill lists. For a temporary site line, non-standard might be a rational choice — if you knew you were buying it. For a pressure main under a road, it's a future excavation.
Corrugated pipe hides its version of the same trick inside the wall: a regrind core between virgin skins. Wall sections get cut and checked at inspection — same philosophy as everything else in our geosynthetics family

A container of pipe is mostly empty space, which is why the loading plan matters more here than almost anywhere: smaller diameters nest inside larger ones, small PE sizes ship as coils instead of sticks, and fittings ride in the voids. A well-nested container against a lazy one is the difference between one box and two.
Pipe also pairs naturally with the rest of a drainage package — perforated pipe with its geotextile sock, corrugated mains with the membrane and GCL going into the same trench system. One consolidated shipment, one document set.
Before It Ships
Pipe inspection is pleasantly physical: ring stiffness test on sample sections against the SN class on the invoice, wall thickness micrometering (thin walls are where non-standard pipe hides), and a cut section through corrugated wall to check what the core is actually made of. Pressure pipe gets its rating verified against the resin certificate.

Straight Answers
Rule of thumb: SN4 for gardens and shallow, traffic-free runs; SN8 under roads, car parks and normal burial; SN10+ for deep burial or heavy axle loads. Your engineer's trench detail decides — and the class must be printed on the pipe and tested on samples, not just typed on the invoice.

Sticks of 6 or 12 m for large diameters, coils for small PE sizes, and smaller pipes nested inside bigger ones. Pipe is a volume product — the nesting plan often matters more than the mill price, which is why we cost the container before quoting per metre.
