Where China makes its trucks, engines, tyres, machinery and building materials — and where XILINK is headquartered. A city-by-city map of what Qingdao, Jinan, Weifang, Linyi and the rest actually produce, how to get here, how to plan a factory route, and what to watch out for.
Most sourcing guides send every buyer to the same three places: Guangzhou for the Canton Fair, Shenzhen for electronics, Yiwu for everything small and plastic. That advice is fine — if you buy phone cases. If you buy machinery, vehicles, tyres, chemicals, building materials, agricultural equipment or processed food, the province you actually want is further north: Shandong.
This is the first deep-dive chapter of our Importer's Guide to Visiting China to Source. It's also the one we can write with the most authority, because Shandong is home. XILINK is based in Jinan, the provincial capital; the factories described below are the ones we drive to for our clients week in, week out. Everything here is first-hand geography, not a rewritten Wikipedia page.

Chapter 01
China's manufacturing belt is not one place. Over forty years, each coastal region has settled into a specialty, and knowing the split saves you days of travel in the wrong direction:
The shorthand we give visiting buyers: if your product is measured in tons rather than grams, Shandong should be on your itinerary.
Shandong consistently ranks among China's top three provinces by GDP, with a population of over 100 million — by itself it would be one of the world's larger economies. It is the home province of names many importers already know without realising it: Haier and Hisense appliances, Sinotruk / HOWO heavy trucks, Weichai diesel engines. Around each of these anchor companies sits a deep bench of suppliers, sub-suppliers and independent factories making compatible equipment, parts and private-label product — which is exactly the layer an importer buys from.
The second structural advantage is logistics. Qingdao is a world-class container port with direct services to Europe, and the province has additional working ports at Yantai, Rizhao and Weihai. In Shandong, a factory and its export port are usually within a few hours' drive of each other — which shows up in your freight cost and lead time.
And the third advantage is the one this page exists for: this is our home turf. XILINK's office is in Jinan. We don't "have a network" in Shandong the way agencies claim to have networks everywhere — we drive to these factories weekly, eat with their sales teams, and know which county makes what. That's the lens for everything below.
Chapter 02
Eight cities cover most of what export buyers come to Shandong for. Each one is a genuine cluster — not a single factory, but dozens to hundreds of competing producers in the same product family, which is what gives you negotiating room.
Appliances · Tyres & Rubber · Port City
Home base of Haier and Hisense, which means a whole ecosystem of home-appliance and electronics factories and their component suppliers. Also a centre for tyres and rubber products, and the province's main container port — many buyers end their route here so they can visit the factory and the forwarder in the same trip.
Heavy Trucks · Machine Tools · Laser Equipment
The provincial capital and home of Sinotruk, China's oldest heavy-truck maker. Beyond trucks: machine tools, CNC equipment, and one of China's biggest clusters of fiber laser cutting machine manufacturers. It's also where our office is — buyers usually land here or in Qingdao and we plan the route outward.
Diesel Engines · Agricultural Machinery · Tractors
Home of Weichai, one of the world's major diesel engine makers, and a dense cluster of agricultural machinery producers — tractors, harvesters, implements, and the parts chains behind them. If you buy farm equipment or anything with a diesel engine in it, Weifang is usually the first stop we propose.
Plywood & Boards · Hardware Wholesale · Logistics
China's plywood and engineered-board capital, plus one of the country's largest wholesale market complexes — hardware, tools, building supplies, household goods. Enormous choice, but also the place where trading companies most often present themselves as factories (more on that in Chapter 05).
Ceramics · Chemicals · Industrial Equipment
An old industrial city known for ceramics — from tableware to technical and architectural ceramics — alongside a large chemical industry and makers of pumps and process equipment. Less polished than the coastal cities, often sharper on price for the same spec.
Construction Machinery · Wine · Seafood Processing
A coastal port city with serious construction-machinery manufacturing, plus two specialties that surprise first-time visitors: China's best-known wine region and a major seafood processing industry. A useful second stop if your list mixes machinery with food products.
Fishing Tackle · Tyres
The world's fishing-tackle workshop — rods, reels and accessories for most global brands come out of Weihai and its surrounding counties — alongside significant tyre manufacturing. A focused, single-category destination: buyers in these niches fly in just for it.
Steel · Bulk Port
A steel town with a deep-water port handling bulk cargo. Relevant if your products are steel-intensive — structures, profiles, heavy fabrications — or if your shipment routing makes Rizhao the natural exit point instead of Qingdao.
How to read this map: don't pick a city first — pick your product, and the city picks itself. Send us your product list and we'll tell you honestly which of these clusters fit, and whether Shandong is the right province for it at all. Sometimes the answer is "that one's a Ningbo product" — and we'll say so.
Chapter 03
Shandong's cities are strung together by high-speed rail: Jinan–Qingdao takes about 2 hours, with Zibo and Weifang as stops on the same line, and connections onward to Yantai and Weihai. Trains are clean, punctual and cheap — book via the official Railway 12306 app, or have us book for you.
The catch: rail gets you between cities, not to factories. Most plants sit in county towns and industrial zones 30–90 minutes from the city-centre station, and that last leg is a car ride. This is exactly why hosted trips work better here than DIY — covered in the next chapter.

One rail line connects four of the province's main manufacturing cities — roughly two hours end to end.
Visiting Shandong · Where to stay
Where you stay in Shandong depends on which cities your route touches. Qingdao — coastal, the province's main port and export hub — is where many machinery and equipment buyers base themselves, close to the port and the manufacturing belt. Jinan, the provincial capital, sits central and is the better base for reaching the inland cities such as Weifang, Linyi and Zibo.
Both cities run from international five-stars to a large supply of clean, good-value business hotels — affordable by Western standards. And getting between them is easy: Shandong is known across China for having some of the country's best-built expressways, which makes self-driving between the province's cities a genuinely comfortable option alongside the high-speed rail. The rule of thumb: if your route is coastal and export-focused, stay in Qingdao; if it is spread across the inland province, Jinan is more central.
Visiting Shandong · Eating
Shandong is the home of Lu cuisine — one of China's eight great culinary traditions and a foundation of northern Chinese cooking, known for seafood, clear savoury broths and braised dishes. On the coast, Qingdao is a seafood city with a beer culture to match: it is the home of Tsingtao, China's most famous beer, brewed here since the German era.
Ask a local, though, and they will point you past the bottle to the fresh draft — the unpasteurised beer that has to be drunk within about a week of brewing. It is so fresh it never really leaves the province, and it is worth seeking out. Inland, this is wheat country — dumplings, hand-pulled noodles and hearty northern fare — and, as everywhere in China, a lot of business gets done over a long lunch.

Shandong is affordable — cheaper than Beijing or Shanghai, and good value even by Chinese standards. Rough orders of magnitude for planning (ballpark, not quotes, and they move with season and exchange rate):

Shandong is one of China's most rewarding provinces to travel, and much of it sits close to a sourcing route:

Chapter 04
The single most common mistake buyers make is over-scheduling. On a map, Shandong's cities look close. In practice, a "factory in Weifang" is often a plant in a county 50 km past Weifang, and a proper visit — plant tour, technical discussion, tea, lunch you can't refuse — eats half a day on its own.
How we run it when we host: we shortlist and pre-check the factories before you book flights, confirm appointments in Chinese, pick you up at the airport, drive every leg, interpret in the room, and debrief with you in the car between plants — which is where the real decisions usually get made.
Chapter 05
Shandong's industrial base grew out of large state-rooted heavy industry, and it shows. You'll meet two species of factory here, and they need different handling:
None of these traps survives a person physically standing in the factory asking the right questions. Shandong's export logistics are one of its quiet advantages: you are never far from a door out of China.

Chapter 08 · FAQ
Heavy and industrial goods: construction and agricultural machinery, heavy trucks, diesel engines, tyres and rubber, chemicals, building materials, plywood and boards, steel products, home appliances, fishing tackle, and food processing. For consumer electronics or small commodities, Guangdong and Zhejiang remain the better fit.
Qingdao Jiaodong (TAO) has the better international connections and suits coastal routes (Qingdao, Yantai, Weihai). Jinan Yaoqiang (TNA) suits inland routes (Jinan, Weifang, Zibo, Linyi). A third option many buyers use: fly long-haul into Beijing, then take the high-speed train to Jinan in about 1.5 hours.
Plan 3–5 days for two to three cities, visiting at most two factories per day — most plants are in county towns 30–90 minutes from the city centre, and a proper visit takes half a day. A focused single-cluster trip (one city, one product family) can be done in 2–3 days.
Check the business licence (it states the registered scope), ask to watch your product family running on their production line, and look at the warehouse rather than the showroom. The pattern is most common around wholesale hubs like Linyi. If you can't go yourself, a third-party factory audit settles the question before you pay anything.
Mainly by container from Qingdao port (FCL or LCL, with consolidation if you bought from several factories), with Yantai, Weihai and Rizhao as secondary ports. China–Europe rail freight also departs from Shandong and sits between ocean and air on both speed and cost. Agree the Incoterm before signing so you know exactly what you're paying for.
