To the naked eye, every roll of HDPE geomembrane looks the same. It is black. It is shiny. It is smooth. You cannot taste, smell, or see the difference between a liner made from 100% Virgin Resin and one made from Recycled Scrap (old plastic bottles and bags).
But the sun knows the difference. A recycled liner will turn grey, become brittle, and crack within 2-3 years of exposure. A virgin liner is engineered to last for decades.
As a Sourcing Architect and shareholder in a GRI-GM13 compliant factory in Shandong, I see buyers getting cheated every day. They buy the cheapest “black plastic” they can find, thinking they saved money. They actually bought a ticking time bomb.
This article explains the “Invisible Chemistry” of our production. We will teach you the one specific test—OIT—that bad factories are terrified of.
The “OIT” Standard: The Lie Detector for Plastic
How do you prove a geomembrane is made of premium virgin resin? You try to burn it (scientifically).
OIT (Oxidative Induction Time) is the industry’s standard “stress test.” We put a sample of the plastic in a chamber with pure oxygen at 200°C and measure how long it takes to start degrading (oxidizing).
- Recycled Material: Because the molecular chains are already damaged from previous use, it has low stability. It will start to degrade in < 10 minutes.
- Xilink Virgin Material: Based on the XILINK technical data sheets we verify for every batch, the geomembranes we ship have a Standard OIT of >100 minutes and a High Pressure OIT of >400 minutes.
This huge gap (10 mins vs. 100 mins) is the difference between a liner that fails and a liner that lasts. When we export to strict markets, we always attach the OIT test report. If a supplier refuses to show you their OIT data, run away.
The “Sunblock” for Your Project: Carbon Black Technology
You might ask: “Why are all geomembranes black?” It’s not for style. It’s for survival. Polyethylene naturally degrades under Ultraviolet (UV) light. To stop this, we add Carbon Black. But the amount and quality matter immensely.
The 2.0% – 3.0% Goldilocks Zone
According to our strict production protocols (GRI-GM13), the Carbon Black content must be precisely between 2.0% and 3.0%.
- Less than 2%: The liner has insufficient UV protection.
- More than 3%: The material becomes brittle and loses tensile strength.
Cheaper factories often mix the carbon unevenly. You might have a spot with 5% carbon (brittle) next to a spot with 0.5% carbon (weak against UV). At our factory, we use advanced mixing equipment to ensure perfect Carbon Black Dispersion. This is why we can guarantee that our material retains ≥80% of its strength even after thousands of hours of UV exposure , offering a theoretical service life of 50 years.
Thickness Integrity: Getting What You Pay For
Another common trick in the “Recycled Market” is skimming on thickness. You order a 1.50mm liner. The factory sends you a 1.35mm liner (claiming it’s within “tolerance”). Over a huge project, that’s tons of missing raw material that you paid for.
We hold ourselves to the ASTM D5199 standard. If you order 1.50mm, our minimum average thickness is strictly controlled to ensure you get the full physical barrier you paid for. We don’t sell “nominal” thickness; we sell “actual” thickness.
Case Study: The “Paper Thin” Failure
We recently replaced a liner for a client who had bought from a “lowest bidder” three years ago. The old liner had shattered. Literally shattered. When we tested a sample of the old material in our lab:
- OIT: 4 minutes. (Clearly recycled trash).
- Carbon Black: 1.2%. (Insufficient UV protection).
- Thickness: Varies from 0.8mm to 1.1mm (ordered as 1.0mm).
The client saved 15% on the initial purchase price. But they had to spend 200% of the project cost to drain the reservoir, remove the toxic waste, and install a new Xilink liner.
Conclusion: Buy the Recipe, Not Just the Roll
When you source geomembranes from China, do not just ask “Price per square meter.” Ask for the OIT Report. Ask for the Resin Brand (we use brands like Sinopec, Sabic, etc.).
As a factory shareholder, my job is to ensure that the chemical formula inside the extruder is perfect. Because once that liner is buried under 50,000 tons of waste or water, you can’t fix it. You have to trust it.
Buy the virgin resin. Buy the OIT. Buy the peace of mind.
